Tree planting marks a-mazing tribute to late mayor and Willaston councillor

By Gwyn Griffiths 22nd Oct 2021

PARISH councillors in Willaston have dedicated a leisure space in the village in memory of a former councillor and borough mayor.

They gathered to rename and dedicate a maze area on Victoria Mill Drive by unveiling a sign and planting a memorial tree in honour of the late Maurice Jones who passed away in October 2019.

Maurice served as a chairman of Willaston Parish Council and was also a former Mayor of Crewe and Nantwich Borough.

Last year planting was added to increase biodiversity at the site, now to be known as Maurice's Maze, and seating put in place along with floor games for children to enjoy.

A new street sign was unveiled during the dedication ceremony at which the Mayor of Cheshire East Cllr Sarah Pochin was present.

Willaston Parish Council Chairman Cllr Craig Bailey reflected upon Maurice's many contributions in his 43 years as a councillor, including his work with the Crewe and Nantwich twinning association.

"The naming of places in honour of people is our way of ensuring that those who had an impact are not forgotten, and indeed this dedication and tree planting will ensure Maurice's service and legacy is remembered for many years to come," said Cllr Bailey.

Maurice's grandson Scott Jones spoke on behalf of the Jones family and a memorial tree was planted by Maurice's great grandson, Ted, during the ceremony concluded by Rev. Paul North with a prayer and dedication.
