CHILDREN in Shavington and Weston have shown their community spirit by making two Remembrance Gardens.

The gardens, placed outside St Mark's Church in Shavington and at All Saints' Church in Weston, are bedecked in poppy displays and messages ready for Remembrance Sunday.

They include some excellent knitted and crocheted poppies after an appeal was made.

The initiative, which has been led by both churches, includes a joint effort from all of the children's schools and groups in the two villages.

Shavington Primary School, Shavington Academy, Weston Primary School, Rounderbouts Nursery, Rope Green Nursery, Edward Bear Club, St Mark's Toddler and GLOW have all taken part.

Event organiser Sara Randle, a children and families worker for St. Mark's Church, said: "We had over 600 poppies knitted and we have made these into a waterfall of poppies on the church cross and over the archways to each church," she said.

"In total over 1,000 members of the community have contributed to the display."

The community gardens continue the tradition of the work done in the villages in 2020.

"Last year we organised a community garden as we were unable to all come together to pay our respects for a Remembrance service," recalled Sara. "This year, although restrictions are lifted, we felt that people would still like to contribute and show their respects and we have been overwhelmed by the response.

"The children have been so creative in their artwork, with many writing poignant words.

"The knitted and crochet poppies are stunning and are a credit to the amazing community that we live in.

"I am extremely grateful and proud of everyone who has contributed to the display, including my own family who spent many hours each night sewing the poppies together and helping me to put up the displays."

The outdoor display will stay up through November for people to visit and enjoy.

There were plenty of poppy displays around Crewe on Armistice Day (November 11) yesterday.

Estate agents Stephenson Brown mounted window displays at their Nantwich Road branch.

While dementia care specialists Belong Crewe held an Armistice Day service led by Rev. Peter Bennett from St Andrew's Church in Crewe.
