Fire officers joined police at Leighton Street as part of the investigation on Tuesday afternoon.

AN "unknown substance" discovered at a Crewe property is not "explosive" say police.

But the identity of the find unearthed at a house in Leighton Street, off Underwood Lane, on Monday (November 8) is being kept under wraps because of an ongoing police investigation.

Cheshire Police stress it does not pose an "explosive" risk to neighbouring residents, but they are unable to confirm the identity of the substance,

Underwood Lane was closed off for part of Tuesday afternoon to allow Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service vehicles access to Leighton Street so officers could examine the substance.

On Monday Cheshire Police carried out a search of the property.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "Due to an ongoing investigation we are unable to confirm the identity of the substance, but we can say that it is not explosive and is not a risk to the general public."
