Wistaston Jubilee Tennis Club celebrated a landmark moment in its history with the official opening of two newly renovated all-weather tennis courts following a remarkable community fundraising effort.

Residents, supporters and visitors gathered at the club's facilities behind Wistaston Memorial Hall and Community Centre, Church Lane, on Saturday 13 June to mark the completion of the project.

Founded in 1977 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee, the club has served the Wistaston community for almost 50 years.

The free grand opening event gave attendees the opportunity to explore the upgraded facilities, meet club members and learn more about the club's activities.

The transformation follows an outstanding fundraising campaign exceeding expectations.

The club's original Crowdfunder target of £15,000 was surpassed, unlocking additional support through Sport England match funding.

Continued backing from sponsors, members and local residents saw the campaign eventually raise more than £42,000.

The funding has enabled the complete resurfacing of the club's two courts with modern all-weather astroturf, improving playing conditions year-round. The remainder of the funds will be used for further improvements, including new court fencing.

Opening proceedings began with a speech from club chairman James Hale, who thanked volunteers, sponsors and supporters for helping turn the ambitious project into reality.

During the ceremony, Mr Hale presented a framed Honorary Life Membership award to long-serving volunteer Bill Heath in recognition of his dedication to the club.

Bill, who has been involved since 2002, has served in a variety of roles including committee member, treasurer, membership secretary and chairman, a position he held from 2014 until 2026. His wife, Helen, was also presented with flowers.

Two new courtside wooden benches were also officially unveiled.

One bench was donated by Poole Alcock Solicitors in memory of their late former partner Richard Barratt, a local resident who spent many enjoyable hours at the club.

The second bench honours the memory of Colin and Mavis Smith, both now deceased, who were long-standing members and coaches at the club and made a lasting contribution to tennis in Wistaston, bearing the inscription: "Together in Life, Love and Tennis."

The official ribbon-cutting ceremony followed, with Court One, sponsored by Prof Heat Services, opened by Cheshire East Mayor Councillor Judy Snowball and Crewe and Nantwich MP Connor Naismith.

Court Two, sponsored by Portcullis Power Solutions, was officially opened by Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Tom Booth and forward Adrien Thibaut.

Visitors enjoyed a full programme of family-friendly activities throughout the day, including refreshments, face painting, children's games and food from The Big Traveling Hotdog.

Tennis activities ran throughout the event, with Mini Tennis sessions and coaching challenges taking place on Court One, led by club coach George Raiswell.

On Court Two, participants tested their skills against visiting Crewe Alexandra players before taking to the court themselves.

A fundraising raffle featured a range of prizes, including weekend tickets to The Brit Fest music festival, Crewe Alexandra match tickets and meals at The Rising Sun.

The club's courts are sponsored by Prof Heat Services and Portcullis Power Solutions.

Team sponsors include Ensure Safety and Training, while Tailored Kitchens, Crave Coffee, Grand Construction Cheshire Ltd, GR Coaching, Andy Leach Physiotherapy and Poole Alcock Solicitors continue to support the club.

Wistaston Jubilee Tennis Club said: "This was a fantastic day and a proud moment in the club's history.

"The incredible support we received from local residents, businesses, volunteers and sponsors has helped us create facilities that will benefit the community for many years to come.

"We are delighted to officially open our new courts and look forward to welcoming both existing and new players to enjoy them."
