Crewe steam enthusiasts are in for another treat this August, as the Cumbrian Mountain Express starts in Cheshire as part of a grand northern railway tour.

The locomotive will take passengers all the way to Carlisle, Settle, and more, straddling Manchester, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales along the way.

Passengers can expect historic towns and remarkable scenery, including the Yorkshire three peaks of Whernside, Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough.

The Cumbrian Mountain Express starts from Crewe Railway Station as part of a grand northern railway tour (Ryan Parker).

The trip takes place on Saturday 26 August, with the train starting from Crewe at 7am.

It will stop at a handful of other stations, including Wilmslow, Stockport and Manchester Victoria (initially pulled by a diesel locomotive) before heading to Carnforth.

Here, a steam locomotive will pull the train up the steep gradient to Grayrigg, through the beautiful Lune Gorge to Tebay, across the Cumbrian Fells to Penrith, and then head for Carlisle.

After two hours in the ancient border town of Carlisle, the train will join the legendary Settle & Carlisle railway, and incorporate Appleby, scenic Kirkby Stephen, towards the highest railway summit in England at Ais Gill.

The journey continues from Hellifield through Clitheroe and Blackburn to Preston, where the steam locomotive departs.

From Preston, the train will take the West Coast Mainline, the Manchester line, and then onward to Crewe by 9:35pm, stopping at the same stations as on the outward journey to set down passengers.

A number of different passenger classes are available.

A Railway Touring Company spokesperson said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for those from the Crewe and Manchester areas to travel by steam train over two of England's most scenic railway routes.

"We travel north to Carlisle by the West Coast Main Line over Shap and return via the famous Settle & Carlisle Railway Line.

"Both routes pass through spectacular mountain scenery.

"A magnificent steam locomotive will haul this train, which recalls the glorious days of steam travel."

The full list of stops and times can be found below.

On its return journey, the locomotive will arrive at Crewe by 9:35pm (Ryan Parker).
