This August marks the 16th anniversary of Owner of United Carpets, Eddie Davies, buying the busy Nantwich Road flooring and beds store.

Nub News has a quick catch-up with Eddie about what's changed in that time:

What was your best seller 16 years ago?

We used to sell a lot more berber-type carpet then, but these seem to have fallen out of fashion.

What is your best seller now?

Twist piles such as our Liberty range (which I have on my own hall, stairs and landing at home, it's lovely).

What do you stock now that you didn't then?

I didn't used to stock Saxony carpets, but now have a big selection of this in several super-soft ranges, they're fabulous for living rooms and bedrooms.

Plus we now have a huge selection of roll-stock vinyl in various widths.

What has most surprised you about running a flooring store?

How quickly interiors trends affect flooring which is often the basis to style the room around.

What do you expect in the near future for the shop?

We've got a big outside painting project about to start, so expect to see a nice facelift.

What's the best thing that has happened to you since taking the store?

Not one specific thing, but I'm very proud that the business has grow every year, and having repeat customers, and those that recommend us to family and friends, is priceless.

And not business but personal, probably adopting Max, a sheepdog cross who was found as a stray in 2016.

He was joined in 2022 by Betsi, a Staffie, who had belonged to a close friend who passed away, so it was only natural she came to us.

What is the worst thing that has happened since taking over United Carpets?

Obviously Covid, no business owner wants to shut their doors and it was a nightmare with the various lockdowns and restrictions, but we got through it and out the other side.

What other local connections do you have in Crewe?

I go to most meetings of the Nantwich Road Action Group, which is doing great work to promote the road and surrounding streets, both for businesses and residents.

Simon Yates set this up to ensure the area can find out about funding and access grants for improvements.

And Crewe BID, which my wife is involved in, helps to stage events, street cleaning projects, the Nantwich Road Christmas Tree, and other community benefits for the whole town.

Plus, Crewe Alex supporters see the shop's pitch-side board at every home game.
