A blind man from Crewe is loving life at an "inclusive" gym in the town, where is he is also enjoying time socialising with others.

Steve Evans, 61, has been attending weekly personal training sessions at Crewe Lifestyle Centre, Forge Street, for the past few years.

The Crewe resident, who has been fully blind his whole life, believes he has finally found somewhere where he feels appreciated.

Steve told Nub News: "I am what is considered as blind, although I have a small perception of light.

"As a teenager, I really got in to sport and felt I could achieve something In it, as opposed to sitting behind a desk.

"During the COVID-19 lockdown a friend encouraged me to do Couch to 5K.

"We worked out the best way of approaching it and I started running on Crewe's King George V Playing Field near to my house.

"The first run I went on with my friend, It felt like my chest was going to explode and I did three kilometres.

"Once I got over that hurdle, I eventually got to the point I was overtaking her and wanted to get back in the gym."

Steve has enjoyed a career in piano tuning and is now working out at Crewe Lifestyle Centre gym (Ryan Parker).

"I got myself a personal trainer at Crewe Lifestyle Centre. This got me committed to coming in at least once per week."

Steve has enjoyed a career in piano tuning and was an avid swimmer in his teenage years.

Since coming to Crewe Lifestyle Centre, run by Everybody Health and Leisure, Steve believes his quality of life has improved.

Steve said: "Everything has just blossomed and snowballed for me since I started coming to Crewe Lifestyle Centre. I have really enjoyed it.

"Swimming was something I really enjoyed as a teenager and I took part in 1980 Summer Paralympics.

"I used to swim at the old Flag Lane Baths pool. It may have been a nice art deco building, but was absolutely freezing on a Monday morning.

Steve Evans only has positive words to say about staff at Crewe Lifestyle Centre (Ryan Parker).

"When the pool moved to Crewe Lifestyle Centre I started swimming here. The team here have always been brilliant. They are so inclusive.

"When I came for a swim, staff would put up a lane rope for me. There are so many other pools that didn't do that for me."

The Everybody member added: "I love the social aspect of coming to the gym and that's why I come here.

"Me and my wife are looking to move house and I really don't want to move too far from reaching distance of this place.

"I just love it so much, it is absolutely fantastic. All staff are inclusive, friendly, helpful and nothing is ever too much trouble.
