Crewe UTC is preparing for another exceptionally busy admissions cycle, after experiencing unprecedented demand for places and seeing applications arrive earlier than ever before.

The specialist engineering and design college on West Street, which admits students in Year 10 and Year 12, is already reporting significant interest in places for September 2027.

Despite the Year 10 application deadline not falling until 31 March 2027, the college has already received around 50 applications and has arranged meetings with all applicants before Christmas.

The early demand follows a year in which Crewe UTC received 200 applications for just 100 Year 10 places, making it one of the most competitive years in the college's history.

Demand for Sixth Form places remains equally strong, with Year 12 currently full and a waiting list in operation.

The latest admissions figures continue a trend that has seen the college grow steadily in popularity over the past five years, driven by its specialist technical curriculum, close employer partnerships and strong progression outcomes.

Principal, Will Chitty, told Nub News: "Last year took us by surprise. We've been steadily growing in popularity over the last five years and we've watched the number of applicants grow over that time.

"I think what's changed is an understanding with young people and their families of the value of a technical education and an appreciation of the amazing opportunities that exist locally for young people joining the engineering sector.

"We live in a part of the country where engineering is booming and over the next 10 years there'll be even more opportunities with projects like HyNet, the new Leighton Hospital, huge investment in offshore wind off Wales and Merseyside all coming online.

"There has never been a better time for young people to give themselves a head start into a career worth having and choosing to study at a specialist college with industry standard facilities will give them the edge over their peers in the future."

Crewe UTC has developed a national reputation for technical education, particularly through its engineering T Levels.

The college now has one of the largest engineering T Level cohorts in the country and consistently achieves results that rank amongst the strongest nationally.

A key factor behind that success is the specialist nature of the college.

Students study in industry-standard facilities and benefit from input from a wide range of engineering professionals and employer partners, bringing real industry expertise directly into the classroom.

The college has also established a distinctive approach to industry placements.

Unlike many T Level providers, Crewe UTC sources placements directly through its network of employer partners rather than asking students to secure opportunities themselves.

This gives learners access to some of the region's largest engineering, manufacturing and infrastructure employers, helping ensure every student gains meaningful workplace experience linked to their studies.

The college's employer-led model recently received national recognition when it was highlighted in Parliament by Secretary of State for Education Lucy Powell, who referenced Crewe UTC as an example of effective collaboration between education and industry.

With demand continuing to grow, college leaders are encouraging prospective students and families to find out more at the next Open Evening, taking place on Thursday 26 November from 5pm to 7pm.

Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the college's specialist facilities, meet staff and students, explore its engineering and design pathways and learn more about the unique opportunities available through employer partnerships and technical education.

For families considering applications for September 2027, the event offers an opportunity to see first-hand why increasing numbers of young people are choosing Crewe UTC as the starting point for careers in engineering, design and advanced manufacturing.

Prospective students and their families can book a place at open evening via the UTC website HERE.
