A parish poll could be held over proposed housing developments around Leighton in Crewe, with residents invited to discuss the issue.

A Parish Meeting will take place at St Peter's Church Hall, Middlewich Road, Bradfield Green, on Wednesday 7 October at 7.30pm.

Residents of Leighton, Minshull Vernon and Woolstanwood are being encouraged to attend and have their say on the wording of the question that could be put to voters.

A parish poll allows registered local government electors to vote on a specific question relating to their parish.

The meeting comes amid major development proposals around west Crewe, including plans for up to 1,700 homes on fields off Moss Lane in Leighton.

A further proposal for up to 2,100 homes at Red Hall Farm, close to Leighton Hospital, which will be fully rebuilt by 2033 for £1.4 billion has also been submitted.

Plans have also been revealed for a potential new £15m to £20m railway station at Leighton, which would serve existing communities and planned housing growth in the area.

The parish meeting will give residents the opportunity to discuss the proposed poll question before deciding whether a poll should proceed.

A poll can be demanded by 10 local government electors or one third of electors present and voting at the meeting, whichever is lower.

If a poll goes ahead, voters would be asked a simple Yes or No question and voting would take place in person between 4pm and 9pm on the designated day.

Cllr Brian Silvester, publicity officer, described the meeting as "grassroots democracy in action".

The meeting is open to all parish residents.
