Crewe Heritage Centre has raced into its 2026 season with record breaking visitor numbers and a bustling Easter Weekend that brought mix of families, railway enthusiasts and curious newcomers through its gates.

The centre reported its best-ever opening day on April 1, with crowds eager to climb aboard the miniature trains, rediscover classic Crewe-built locomotives and explore proud exhibits and heritage gems tucked around the site. 

Crewe Heritage Trust were delighted to welcome both the Crewe Town Council Mayor and Deputy Mayor to visit on the centre's opening day.

The centre also welcomed Creative Crewe, who delivered spring crafts for the visiting families and will be back again with more workshops later in the season.  

Following this triumphant start, the centre is gearing up for its second free Wednesday on 8 April, part of Crewe Town Council's Spring Festival of Fun.

Visitors of all ages are invited to come along free of charge (donations welcomed) and enjoy a day packed with activity.

A special highlight will be the Butterfly Conservation's workshop, The World of Butterflies and Moths.

This family-friendly session promises surprising facts, myth-busting, and an engaging introduction to why these insects matter so much to our environment. Children can even create their own origami butterfly.

The celebrations continue the following weekend, as Crewe Heritage Centre opens again on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 April, with a family pleasing offer available all season, kids go free.

2026 sees the launch of unlimited tickets, giving visitors the chance to return as many times as they like throughout 2026, a perfect option for those who can't get enough of Crewe's iconic local and railway heritage. 

There's plenty new for returning guests to enjoy. The café has expanded its menu to include hearty favourites such as bacon and sausage butties, along with fresh sandwiches, snacks, milkshakes, iced coffees and ice creams.

The shop has undergone a cheerful revamp and now occupies a new location at the entrance and exit to the site, stocked with treats for younger visitors and more new items arriving soon. 

Out on the tracks, Crewe Heritage Centre's miniature railway is back in service, with its volunteer team thrilled to welcome passengers aboard once more.

Among the outdoor locomotive displays, the star attraction is the long-awaited reopening of the Advanced Passenger Train Exhibition, returning after two seasons of closure and already drawing keen interest from enthusiasts.

Trainspotters can enjoy elevated views from the Centre's viewing platform, while the ever=popular Exeter West signal box will offer live signalling demonstrations on all open days (except Wednesday 8 April).

"To break our visitor record right at the start of the season is a huge boost for our volunteers and the whole site.

"It proves that Crewe Heritage Centre continues to be a place where history, engineering and family fun come together. We can't wait to share even more with our visitors in the months ahead." 

With so much to see and do, from nostalgic engines to heritage and natureinspired crafts, Crewe Heritage Centre's strong start to the season has set the tone for what promises to be a vibrant and memorable year.

Crewe Heritage Centre is open every weekend and Bank Holiday, as well as Wednesdays during the Cheshire East school holidays.
