UNDERWOOD Lane in Crewe was closed off for part of this afternoon (Tuesday) as firefighters investigated an "unknown substance" found at a home.

The probe follows an arrest at a house on the adjoining Leighton Street yesterday (Monday) as part of an ongoing police investigation.

Cheshire Police said they carried out a search and unearthed the substance before evacuating the property.

While they say there is "no risk to the wider community" the fire service has been called in to establish what the substance is.

That saw the closure of Underwood Lane, from the junction of West Street to the junction with Badger Avenue, so as to allow access for Cheshire Fire Service vehicles.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "As a precaution, all those inside the address have been evacuated and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service have been called to the scene to assist with further enquiries.

"A road closure will be put in place on Underwood Lane later today to allow vehicles to access the site. At this stage there is not believed to be any risks to the wider community."
