Residents evacuated and bomb disposal called after 'hand grenade' found in Crewe
Local residents had to be evacuated with a bomb disposal unit called, after a "hand grenade" was found at a flat in Crewe.
On Thursday 24 August, Cheshire Police officers were searching a flat in Mavor Court, off Flag Lane, when they came across what was believed to be an explosive weapon.
At 6:15pm, officers called a bomb disposal unit to the scene (EOD), evacuating residents from neighbouring flats.
Following checks of the hand grenade, it was found to be empty.
A police cordon put in place was lifted shortly after 8pm.
A Cheshire Police spokesperson told Nub News: "At around 6.15pm on Thursday 24 August, officers conducting a search at a flat In Mavor Court, Flag Lane, discovered what was believed to be a hand grenade.
"EOD were called to the scene and a police cordon was been put in place as a precautionary measure.
"A number of neighbouring flats were also evacuated.
"It was subsequently found that the grenade was empty and the cordon was lifted shortly after 8pm."
The search of the flat came after a man from Crewe was arrested in connection with a serious assault in Manchester.
A woman was also arrested, with both being transferred to GMP major incident team.
