By Ryan Parker 8th Sep 2022

Crewe residents have shared memories of times the Queen made visits to Crewe - following the news she sadly passed away.

After being closely monitored by doctors for a number of hours, Queen Elizabeth II sadly died at Balmoral Castle this afternoon (September 8).

Crewe Nub News looks back at memories Her Majesty created for local residents when she visited the town over her 70-year reign.

Queen Elizabeth II officially opened Crewe Heritage Centre on June 24 1987 (Crewe Heritage Centre).

More than 35 years ago, on June 24 1987, Queen Elizabeth II officially opened Crewe Heritage Centre.

A Crewe Heritage Festival took place to mark 150th years since the arrival of the first passenger train to stop at Crewe station on the Grand Junction Railway.

This was not the only visit the UK's longest reigning monarch in history made to South Cheshire.

Crewe residents told Nub News what they remembered about her visits.

"She went to open the heritage centre afterwards."

Crewe resident, Elizabeth Bryant said: "It was the opening of the Heritage Centre. We were allowed out of Rail House for a while."

She told Nub News: "I worked in the town centre and we were allowed to leave for a short time to watch the Queen go by the Square."

Another former Crewe works employee, Kev Brown said: "We escaped before she left the works and drove down Victoria Avenue with a motorcycle police escort waving at the flag waving public."

Crewe resident, Clare Woolrich, looked back to her childhood, adding: "I remember waiting outside the gates of Queens Park as a kid with school, waiting for her to drive past as we waved flags."

Queen Elizabeth II was due to make a visit to Crewe's Bentley Motors factory, Pyms Lane - back in March 2020.

The visit was postponed as the coronavirus pandemic spread rapidly through the population - starting a national lockdown.
