Proposals to split Crewe town centre unit into three given green light
Proposals to split Crewe town centre's former Poundland unit three with four new first floor residential apartments, has been given the go-ahead.
On June 14, Cheshire East Council has given permission for commercial property agent, Rory Mack, to develop 61-67 Market Street.
Rory Mack wants to split the former Poundland unit, which closed in October 2021, into three separate units on the ground floor.
It also wants to partly convert first floor storage space into four residential apartments.
These plans include alterations to the existing Market Street shop frontage, allowing access for the new retail space and accommodation.
This year, Crewe's former Poundland unit was under offer from another discount retailer, which has now sadly fallen through.
A Cheshire East planning officer said: "The application site is a vacant retail unit located within the settlement boundary and town centre boundary for Crewe.
"The proposed subdivision of the retail unit and the provision of four apartments at first floor level is acceptable in principle.
"The highways, amenity, noise, air quality and contaminated land implications are considered to be acceptable.
"The detailed design would not appear out of character in this location and the proposal would have a neutral/beneficial impact upon the setting of the nearby heritage asset.
"The proposal would provide an acceptable level of amenity for the future occupiers of the proposed apartments.
"The proposed development complies with the development plan as a whole and is recommended for approval."
Rory Mach told Nub News its Market Street development will only come to fruition if the unit is not taken taken up by another retailer in the near future.
Director, Martin Grainger, said: "The planning application Is not particularly for anything at the moment, other than keeping the options open.
"A discount store who were taking the unit have now pulled out, so we are actively marketing this unit again.
"In the current climate, larger units are harder to rent due to large overheads and business rates.
"By splitting the units up, this makes it a more viable option to a retailer or small business."
