Popular Crewe truck stop and café to remain open for 'foreseeable future'
A popular Crewe truck stop and café will remain open for the 'foreseeable future' - despite land recently being sold to Network Rail.
Crewe Truck Stop, Cowley Way, was purchased by Network Rail in March.
The four-acre site was purchased for an undisclosed fee - as reported by Crewe Business News last week.
Network Rail plans to bring Cowley Way into operational use next year.
Crewe Truck Stop has taken a short-term lease on the site until 2024.
On Wednesday 5 April, the overnight HGV parking business made a statement on social media - dismissing rumours it had already closed down.
A statement read: "I'm going to try and dispel the rumours that we have closed down. This isn't true, we are open as usual.
"For some years now there has been a compulsory purchase order on the site by HS2.
"Eventually the truck stop will be taken over by the HS2 project. Believe me we have fought against this for years but, as with many people, we have no say in this.
"Further to this, we were approached by network rail to sell the premises early due to them having a need for the site for essential works on the existing railway.
"This sale has taken place with an agreement for us to carry on operating the business as a truck stop until they require the site.
"So for the foreseeable future we will be open as normal."
Property consultancy, Legat Owen, completed the sale of Cowley Way on behalf of Network Rail.
Legat Owen director, Matt Pochin, delighted with the purchase, said "We originally acquired the site for our long-term client over 20 years ago and are pleased to have been involved in its subsequent sale.
"Crewe has a huge amount of future potential with a significant amount of investment and development in the pipeline.
"Not least, Cheshire East Council's plans to redevelop the train station, which is located only a quarter of a mile away from the Cowley Road site."
Crewe Truck Stop has a Google rating of 4.5/5 from 705 reviews.
The café will remain open even when Network Rail begin operating at the site.
The sale of Cowley Way comes after Network Rail purchased Mannin House and the former Total Fitness Site, off Macon Way, in 2022.
