The Myrtle Building will officially open its doors this weekend, following a major transformation of the former Territorial Army centre.

Hope Church Crewe is inviting local residents to a family fun day at the Myrtle Street building on Saturday 19 September, from 11am to 2pm.

The event will include an official opening ceremony at noon, followed by a free BBQ from 12.30pm.

There will also be children's activities and games, live music, coffee and cake, alongside the building's Community Grocery and charity shop.

The former TA drill hall at 46 Myrtle Street had stood in a derelict state before Hope Church took on a 10-year lease and spent around 10 months renovating the building.

It is now home to the Crewe Community Grocery, run by The Message Trust and Hope Church, offering members affordable food shopping from £5 per visit.

The grocery opened in March and stocks items including fresh fruit and vegetables, bakery products, frozen food, tins, household essentials and toiletries. Membership costs £1 a year.

The Myrtle Building is also being used as a wider community hub, with Hope Church services, a café, toddler groups and other activities taking place there.

The building's regular programme includes a Sunday service from 10.30am, while the Community Grocery is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm.

Hope + Coffee is open on Fridays from 10am to 2pm, serving homemade cakes, fresh panini and Nespresso coffee, with Thursday opening due to start soon.

Hope Tots runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with morning and afternoon sessions for toddlers and their parents or carers.

Hope Youth, for 11 to 18-year-olds, takes place on Friday evenings from 7pm to 9pm at Hope Church Central on Derrington Avenue.

An Alpha Course is also starting at the Myrtle Building on Friday 18 September, running from 6pm to 8pm every Friday, with a free meal provided.

The Saturday opening event is part of Crewe Heritage Week, with organisers saying everyone is welcome.
