Popular Crewe town centre venue attracts hundreds for Indian Festival of Lights celebration event
A popular Crewe town centre venue has celebrated the Indian Festival of Lights - hosting a special cultural evening attended by local members of the community.
Crewe Market Hall celebrated Diwali on Tuesday (October 25) - running from 6pm to 10pm.
The event was organised by owner of Crewe Asian Store, Mr Teja Vaddala.
More than 300 people from the local Indian community came to the cultural evening - attracting children, parents and grandparents.
Mr Vaddala told Nub News: "Diwali is one of the most popular festivals of Hinduism and symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness.
"There has been a huge increase in Indian population in Crewe in recent years.
"We organised the event to celebrate the cultural diversity in this town.
"This proves that Crewe is a community champion.
"It's not only a railway town which connects rail networks, it also connects communities and always remains a community hub.
"Diversity is the biggest asset for Crewe in this multi-cultural society."
As part of the Diwali event, there were lots of cultural performances from kids and adults.
Authentic Indian food was also served to visitors via stalls.
Crewe and Nantwich MP, Dr Kieran Mullan, joined the celebrations, along with Cheshire East councillors Janet Clowes, Steve Edgar and Allen Gage.
Mr Vaddala said: They enjoyed the event thoroughly, they even made some dance moves to cheer up the crowd.
"As a part of the event we conducted a kids colouring competition, Rangoli competition and Mehndi [Hand art], where prizes were handed over by the MP and councillors.
"A special thanks to Bombaye Junction and Krishna caters for amazing authentic food."
At the end of event, all visitors and organisers had a two-minute silence for the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Attendees thanked Her Majesty for her services to the Commonwealth and United Kingdom.
Mr Vaddala added: "I want to give special thanks to: Gary Johnson, Richard Ross and Melissa Bateman for their incredible support to host this event.
"I also want to thank each member of ICC steering committee for their enormous support.
"The event wouldn't have been successful without them."
