Police urged motorists to find alternative routes around the incident.

PCSO Lizzie Jolley said: "Mill Street is closed and surrounding roads will be affected due to a lorry hitting the railway bridge this morning.

At 12pm, Network Rail confirmed rail passengers were experiencing "needless" train delays,

A spokesperson told Nub News: "Rail passengers are currently experiencing needless train delays between Chester and Crewe after a lorry carrying concrete panels hit a railway bridge.

"It has been damaged and our engineers are currently assessing when we can run trains again over the structure.

"We'd advise people to please check National Rail Enquiries while this work is ongoing.

"Bridge strikes like these cost taxpayers millions of pounds every year and can be completely avoided.

The Crewe to Chester line reopened after over three hours of delays (Ryan Parker).

"We urge drivers to always know the height and size of their vehicles - including any loads they are carrying.

"And to carefully plan their routes so our infrastructure isn't put at risk in this way."
