Plans have been put forward for a new 24-hour access storage facility in Crewe, located at the town's old printworks site destroyed by a deliberate fire in August 2024.

Applicant, Ms Jen Lawson, of Lock Stock Self Storage Limited, has submitted plans for the installation of a containerised self-storage facility  at the former Communisis site, Frances Street.

Lock Stock Self Storage, which has facilities in the likes of Chester, Wrexham, Deeside and Shrewsbury, wants to put 175 storage units at the Crewe South site.

The demolished site, now hardstanding, would be inaccessible to pedestrians, with access restricted to vehicular traffic only (Ryan Parker).

The storage company has also proposed associated infrastructure, security measures, including "high definition CCTV" and improved access arrangements.

A design and access statement reads: "The site was previously occupied by a building which was demolished and is now fully hardstanding.

"The site remains level and suitable for redevelopment without requiring significant land preparation.

"Storage containers will be arranged in a logical grid pattern, allowing clear vehicular and pedestrian movement.

"Containers will be raised on blocks, ensuring adequate drainage and preventing water buildup.

"The storage containers will be finished in bottle green, ensuring a visually aesthetic finish that integrates well with the surroundings.

"Perimeter fencing and gated entry will provide a secure environment, aligning with safety requirements.

"CCTV surveillance and six-metre electric gate access will enhance site security.

"Each container will have an allocated area in front for temporary parking during loading and unloading, ensuring efficient site operation."

The Lock Stock Self Storage would have 24-hour access for vehicles with high definition CCTV and other security measures (CEC Planning).

James Evans, 19, of Welles Street, Sandbach, Justin Keeling, (formerly Evans), 18, of Catherine Street, Crewe,  pleaded guilty to setting fire to the former printworks in February.

Evans and Keeling have been remanded in custody to be sentenced at Chester Crown Court on Monday 14 April.

The last date for submitting comments on Lock Stock Self Storage's plans is Tuesday 29 April, with a target decision date of Tuesday 3 June.
