A new Crewe residential development has been given the green light, bringing a derelict former Egyptian restaurant building back into use on the edge of the town centre.

On Tuesday 24 October, Cheshire East Council approved a new three-storey apartment block on 30 High Street, comprising five residential units.

Bought at auction in 2022, applicant, Mr Hilton Mundy, will construct one additional floor, as well as installing a new roof and cladding to the top floor of the property.

Bought at auction in August 2022, applicant, Mr Hilton Mundy, will construct one additional floor, as well as installing a new roof and cladding to the top floor of the High Street building (Cheshie East Planning).

Plans were revised to ensure accordance with the national space standards, retaining the flat roof from the former Ozzy's restaurant and bar.

A Cheshire East planning officer said: "The proposal is considered to result in investment that could help regenerate High Street, stimulating other developments to follow suit.

"Whilst the design team raised concern regarding the loss of a modest town centre use at ground floor, the building has been vacant for a significant period of time.

The High Street building was once occupied by a restaurant and bar. It has stood derelict for around two decades (Ryan Parker).

"The regeneration of the building is considered to outweigh the loss of the lawful commercial use.

"There is no wider strategy currently present for High Street and thus it is not considered the lack of a wider strategy would warrant a refusal of the regeneration scheme proposed.

"The proposed development is therefore considered acceptable in principle, subject to compliance with other development plan policies."

A cycle storage and bin store will be located at the rear of the building at ground floor level.

Cheshire East noted Crewe has a population of Swift birds, with a number located in the High Street area.

A condition was attached to the approval notice requiring the provision of features for swifts to be included.
