Plans for a new railway station in Crewe have been given a boost after a feasibility study found a proposed Leighton station could be technically delivered, supporting a positive business case.

The proposed station would be built on the Crewe-to-Chester line, just off the A530 Middlewich Road between Leighton and Woolstanwood, directly west of Bentley Motors.

Cheshire East Council is now considering the findings of the study, with further work proposed during the 2026/27 financial year.

The two-platform station would include step-free access, lifts and a footbridge, along with parking, drop-off facilities and bus stops.

It is designed to serve existing communities around Leighton, as well as major housing growth and the new £1.4 billion hospital planned for west Crewe.

The council says the lack of any intermediate stations between Crewe and Chester, combined with significant development in the area, provides a strong case for a new stop.

The study estimates the station could generate between 150,000 and 277,000 passenger journeys every year, potentially helping to reduce car journeys and pressure on local roads.

The estimated cost of building the station is currently between £15 million and £20 million.

A further £200,000 is being sought to develop the project, including preparation of an Outline Strategic Outline Case and discussions with Network Rail and rail industry partners.

Funding for the eventual scheme is expected to involve the Cheshire and Warrington Combined Authority and contributions from developers behind housing schemes in the area.

Cheshire East's report says: "The early feasibility work has concluded that a new station at Leighton is operationally feasible, technically deliverable and capable of supporting a positive business case."

It adds that this is subject to future housing growth in the station's catchment area and further refinement of costs.

There is still no confirmed construction or opening date.

Further work is expected to take place during the 2026/27 financial year, alongside Cheshire East's Local Plan review.

The council will also engage with Network Rail, train operators, local councillors, the Combined Authority and other key organisations.

A decision on whether to progress the work is due to be considered by Cheshire East Council's Portfolio Holder for Highways and Transport from 26 August 2026.

If approved, the next phase will establish in greater detail whether the station can be delivered and how the estimated £15m to £20m cost could be funded.
