POLICE say no-one was "seriously injured" during a series of incidents which prompted a stop-and-search sweep around part of Crewe yesterday.

Davenport Avenue, Claughton Avenue and the Brookhouse Estate were put under a Section 60 order by Crewe Local Policing Unit and "high-visibility" patrols were drafted in.

The strict measures were introduced after a number of incidents, involving threats of violence using knives, over the weekend in the area.

They were in place until 3pm yesterday (Sundady).

The powers, granted under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act (1994), allow officers to stop and search any person or vehicle looking for weapons, whether or not they have any grounds of suspicion.

Insp. Nick Rogers, of Crewe LPU said: "There have been a small number of incidents in recent days involving threats of violence with knives.

"Fortunately, no-one has been seriously injured but we want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to deter people from this type of behaviour.

"Use of these additional powers is not something we take lightly, but we believe it necessary to demonstrate to the community we are on the front foot in our response to violent crime and to reassure local residents that we are doing everything we can to keep them safe."
