A new three-year 'Street Sports' partnership running from July to November has officially launched in Crewe, set to benefit hundreds of young people in the town.

Crewe Town Council is leading the partnership with local charity The Wishing Well to deliver free 'Street Sports' physical activities and recreational play within local parks.

The aim of the project is to encourage children aged between eight and 16 years of age to spend more time out of doors, have fun in a safe space, encourage pride in local green spaces and be more active.

Sessions for the first year of the project begin on Monday 1 July, running until Friday 1 November.

They will take place in designated park locations each day between Mondays and Fridays.

Funding has been committed by Crewe Town Council to deliver the project for three years. It is anticipated around 800 local young people will directly benefit by taking part in the sessions.

All activities will be delivered by suitably qualified facilitators. Fifteen volunteer roles will also be created to support the project.

The classes will be held in five local parks within Crewe:

The 'Street Sports' project, aimed at eight to 16-year-olds, will take place at five parks across different days in Crewe (Cheshire East Council).

"Crewe Town Council is committed to leading the way in finding new projects to effectively engage with the local community and improve physical, mental and emotional wellbeing."

The drop-in sessions are free for Crewe residents. Comfortable clothing and suitable footwear should be worn for all activities and bring a bottle of water.

Chief Executive Officer of The Wishing Well, Charles Maines, said: "The Wishing Well are delighted to be working in partnership with Crewe Town Council to bring Street Sports back to Crewe.

"As a concept, this programme aims to provide young people with the opportunity to take part in multi-sports activities every evening across the summer for the next three years.

"The power of sport and physical activity can provide children and young people with the opportunity to get active and improve their health and wellbeing, while developing confidence, communication and key social skills such as teamwork, leadership and problem solving."
