A new takeaway-only sushi chain has opened in Crewe, with its owner putting the focus on freshly prepared food and admitting he wishes they had opened as a restaurant.

Zumuku Sushi, Meredith Street, opened its doors on 8 August, offering a menu of traditional and modern Japanese dishes.

Owner Abhishek told Nub News: "The most important thing for us is freshness. I don't know if other sushi places do everything fresh or not, but we do everything from scratch, very fresh.

"Even the salmon and tuna, we cut it on the go whenever we have orders. We try to fillet the whole salmon three days a week so we keep everything fresh, otherwise, it won't meet the standards that we want."

The new Crewe branch is takeaway-only, with Abhishek keen to make that clear to customers after some had expected a dine-in option.

He said: "I believe people think that we are a restaurant at the moment, which is giving some bad impressions when they come here and are disappointed that we are just a takeaway.

"When we announced ourselves, there were no sushi places here. Now I feel like we should have made a restaurant instead.

"We will potentially in the future, I think we should do it, maybe in the town centre.

"We didn't know sushi would be this popular, and loads of people want us to be a restaurant here."

The Crewe opening is also helping provide more shifts for staff from Zumuku's established Congleton branch during quieter periods.

"The only reason why we opened in Crewe is to facilitate the staff working in Congleton," Abhishek told Nub News.

"Congleton is very busy in the summer and we have loads of staff there for the summer, but winter is very, very quiet. So we decided, 'Okay, let's open a small branch in Crewe, a town three times Congleton's size."

The Crewe team currently consists of three staff, all working across from Congleton.

The menu includes sushi platters, nigiri, maki, sashimi, sushi tacos, ramen, bao buns, poke bowls, katsu, teriyaki and stir-fried noodles.

The Happy Sushi Platter, Pork Ramen and Zumuku Special Roll are currently among the most popular dishes.

For now, Zumuku Sushi is concentrating on its takeaway operation, with delivery and collection available. You can also order on Deliveroo.

Zumuku Sushi is open on Meredith Street from 12pm to 9pm (Wednesday to Sunday).
