A new children and families hub will open in Crewe Town Centre later this year - following support from volunteers to help a Crewe charity refurbish a long vacant unit.
The Wishing Well Project charity, based in Crewe, got the keys for the former Financial Experts unit, Chester Bridge - last month (May).
It is now working on a new hub for local people - supported by the volunteering work of Radius Crewe employees and the charities partners.
On Wednesday (June 22), twelve volunteers came to the unit and worked from 5pm until 7:30pm on refurbishing it for the new hub.
The hub will appeal to children and families in the local area.
"Over the next three years we are hoping to reach 2500 children and families in the local area," says CEO of The Wishing Well Project, Charles Maines.
There are a number of rooms being refurbished for the venue, including an entertainment space with TV's and pool tables, a toddler area and a hire room.
It is hoped that the refurbishment can be completed by September with test events planned before then.
Charles Maines told Nub News: "We're really excited for this project I keep saying to the people that the centre itself has huge potential.
"All the planning, consultations and discussions we have had to get to where we are now makes it all worthwhile.
"In terms of what we can offer, the exciting part is yet to come."
The aim of The Wishing Well Project is to improve the health and wellbeing of local people.
It does this through the provision of a range of participative activities and learning opportunities identified and requested by the community.
Mr Maines said: "Its great to see this hub start to take place now. We are looking to get some test events up and running later this summer.
"In August itself, we will be doing soft activities with a main launch in September.
"We are just really excited for what this place will be and a lot of children and families will benefit."
The volunteers from Radius will help on the Crewe town centre project every Wednesday up until its launch.
During this week's volunteering, the group worked on skirting boards and walls.
Many arrived straight from work and put effort into redeveloping the Crewe unit.
The CEO added: "We we were looking for suitable places for this hub, accessibility was a key factor.
"This unit in Crewe town centre, people can walk to and get to easily.
"We wanted to be in the town centre and to have the space we have here is brilliant."
The Wishing Well Project has facilities in Crewe town centre at Jubilee House and in the West End at The Georges Community Centre.
Mr Maines added: "We just wanted to get a facility we could be really proud of. A home for children and families."
Crewe Nub News will check in on the progress of the hub later this month.
