A British charity is planning to build a number of new out-of-town superstores across the UK - with Crewe being one of the its target locations.

Age UK currently has over 250 charity shops across the UK - with two of them in Crewe.

The charity has an Age UK store located on Market Street, with an Age UK Cheshire store on Nantwich Road.

According to the latest expansion drive from Age UK, it plans to open superstores in approximately 60 locations across Britain.

Crewe has been identified as one of the target locations, with the nearby city of Chester also a target.

Age UK was formed in 2009 - combining the previously separate charities of Age Concern England and Help the Aged.

With its headquarters in London, it is the largest charity for older people in Britain - made up of more than 1,500 employees.

This week, Nub News spoke to members of the team at the Age UK Crewe Market Street store.

Staff were unaware of the potential superstore but are proud of what the charity is achieving.

Manager of Age UK, Mrs Sue Bosman, told Nub News: "I do this job because it's great to help the local community and also help people in older life.

"I have worked here for seven years now."

Age UK, Market Street is located on the edge of the town centre - the town side of Chester Bridge (Ryan Parker).

According to the Age UK plans, opportunities for a superstore will be considered nationwide.

The charity says it wants 'ideal locations to compliment the existing portfolio of shops.'

Mrs Bosman is paid as the manager of The Crewe store. It is a team made up of eight volunteers.

The manager said: "I haven't heard of any superstore plans, but we have had more donations to our shop since COVID-19.

"People have been sorting their homes out and more donations have been given."

Age UK says it ideally wants superstores located on retail parks/out of town units that range between 3,000 to 8,000 sq ft.

It's target location document read: "Age UK are seeking retail space for superstore format stores to continue to grow and evolve an already established out-of-town store format."

Volunteer at Age UK, Market Street, Mrs Anne Tracey told Nub News: "I do this job because it helps me with my mental health.

"I suffered a loss in my life that deeply affected me. I wanted something good to do that would pass the time."

Mrs Tracey has been a volunteer at the Crewe town centre shop for five months and loves working there.

The volunteer added: "Working here helps one another out. I enjoy what i am doing.

"The charity is very good to work for. There is no pressure put on any members of staff."

In the list of approximately 60 target locations, Age UK is also looking at the likes of Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester and Milton Keynes.

The charity says units would be considered on fixed terms or on a trial/short time basis with scope to convert successful opportunities into longer term arrangements.
