A national gym chain is hopeful of opening in Crewe for 2023 - 'subject to planning permission' from Cheshire East Council.

In February, PureGym, confirmed that it would be opening on the Grand Junction Retail park - rather than the Phoenix Leisure Park.

The 24-hour gym chain targeted vacant premises at the former MFA Bowl unit last summer - this has since been approved for a Tenpin bowling centre.

PureGym was delayed and opted for the Grand Junction Retail Park instead - inside the former Sofology unit.

This retail Park plan has since been held up as PureGym has not managed to secure a change of use approval from Cheshire East Council.

PureGym remains optimistic it can still deliver a 24-hour gym to the Grand Junction Retail Park.

Yesterday (August 1), a PureGym spokesperson told Nub News: "PureGym is delighted to be bringing affordable, flexible fitness to Crewe early next year.

"Subject to planning permission, the state-of-the-art gym will be located at the Grand Junction Retail Park and will be open 24/7, offering members fixed pin and free weights, a functional area, group exercise studio classes and access to our PTs."

Cheshire East Council is still accessing whether a gym is appropriate for the Crewe retail park.

In June, the council approved PureGym's external alterations application.

This included the construction of bi-fold doors, structural changes and an installation of an air conditioning plant.

The PureGym spokesperson added: "This will be a fantastic facility for the people of Crewe and surrounding communities, bringing investment to the local area and creating new jobs in the thriving fitness sector.

The PureGym would be located next to the former Grand Junction Retail Park Bella Italia restauarant (Ryan Parker).

"We very much hope we will be in a position to welcome new members in 2023."
