MP backs Andy Burnham after Keir Starmer announces resignation plans
By Ryan Parker 22nd Jun 2026
The Crewe and Nantwich MP has backed Andy Burnham to become the next Prime Minister, following Sir Keir Starmer's announcement on Monday 22 June that he intends to step down.
Speaking to Crewe Nub News, the MP praised Starmer's record in office and said Labour must now unite behind a successor capable of delivering the party's election promises.
Mr Naismith said: "Keir Starmer has put the country before self-interest in announcing his intention to resign as Prime Minister.
"There are many things he can be proud of in his almost two years in the role.
"British leadership on the world stage, particularly on Ukraine and Iran.

"Landmark legislation to bring railways into public ownership, upgrade workers rights and protect renters.
"Lifting 500,000 children out of poverty, and many more achievements.
"My own view is that we must now unite behind a new leader who can unite the country and deliver the change we promised at the General Election.
"For me it is clear that person is Andy Burnham."
The MP said Burnham is best placed to unite both the Labour Party and the country.
Burnham's path to Downing Street has since been cleared after Wes Streeting backed him to become the next Prime Minister.
