FORECASTERS are predicting more snow and ice around Crewe tomorrow (Wednesday) as police issued a warning to motorists not to make unnecessary journeys.

The downfalls of snow last night and this morning have left rural roads around town icy and treacherous. The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for ice highlighting the dangerous driving conditions.

Temperatures are set to plummet to freezing (0C) by 10pm tonight and the cold snap is set to continue and the Met has already issued snow warnings for Wednesday and Friday for the Cheshire East area.

There could be a light dusting on high grounds, particularly in the east of the borough, tonight. But the snow is predicted to sweep in from the north by tea-time tomorrow with travel disruption the likely outcome.

Cheshire East Highways says it will have a workforce out re-gritting routes in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

"We are currently out treating all gritting routes on the network. We will be treating all routes again at 3am. Please take care on the roads and always remember to drive to the conditions," said a Highways spokesman.

While current tier three restrictions have put paid to many people's travel plans, Cheshire Police said: "Please only travel if necessary, leave more time for your journey, slow down and leave more distance between you and other vehicles."

Many people seized the chance to get out into the great outdoors after days of lockdown restrictions with many heading for Queens Park and Joey the Swan in Wistaston (see pictures).

But for some the snowy layer meant life was much harder, such as this pony in the Nub News video clip (above) taken at Lakemore Farm Park near Crewe.
