Major roads in Crewe are set to close and temporary lights will be installed as part of a four-phase highway improvements scheme, taking place at a busy junction.

From Monday 10 February, works will be taking place at the junction of Hightown, West Street and Broad Street, lasting until at least Saturday 12 April.

Partly funded by the Safer Roads Fund, Cheshire East Highways will be widening the existing footways on all four arms of the junction and upgrading traffic signals equipment.

As part of phase one of the works, a road closure is in place on Hightown, between the junction and Samuel Street, from 10 February to 10 March 2025 (Ryan Parker).

They will also be resurfacing the entire junction, widening and improving the existing crossing points and refreshing the existing road markings.

Temporary traffic signals and 24-hour road closures will be in place in phases for approximately nine weeks, starting with the closure of Hightown between the junction and Samuel Street.

The Hightown/Broad Street junction works will be carried out in four stages as follows:

  • Phase one: Road closure in place on Hightown from 10 February to 10 March 2025
  • Phase two: Two-way traffic signals in place on West Street from 10 February to 7 April 2025
  • Phase three: Road closure in place on Broad Street from 10 March to 4 April 2025
  • Phase four: Road closure in place on all four arms of the junction from 7 April to 12 April 2025

Cheshire East Highways said: "We are carrying out highway improvement works on Hightown/Broad Street junction, Crewe, to introduce measures to improve safety and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

"The works are partly funded by the Safer Roads Funds which is for road safety improvement schemes to reduce the number and severity of fatal and serious injury collisions on the 50 highest risk road sections in England.

Cheshire East Highways will be widening the existing footways on all four arms of the junction, upgrading traffic signals equipment, resurfacing the entire junction, widening and improving the existing crossing points and refreshing the existing road markings (Ryan Parker).

"The level of risk is based on the Road Safety Foundation's analysis and report on road safety nationally."

Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained at all times and cyclists may be asked to dismount.

Emergency services are aware of the planned closure and access will be facilitated wherever possible.
