Former Labour Crewe and Nantwich MP Laura Smith has hit out at Boris Johnson's Conservative government - labelling it 'an embarrassing soap opera.'
Yesterday (July 7), Boris Johnson, confirmed he would be resigning as Prime Minister - but could remain in post until this Autumn.
A Conservative leadership contest will be held to decide Johnson's replacement.
Crewe South Labour councillor, Laura Smith, told Nub News: "At the time of a national crisis where wages and earnings and the cost of living is leaving families in real financial difficulty with untold stress and worry, parliament once again descends into an embarrassing soap opera.
"Boris Johnson should never have been allowed near the office of Prime Minister. I was told by many in his party at the time it wouldn't happen, but it did.
"It has been documented time and time again what his views are.
"Let's be clear: Johnson was the lying, over privileged, elitist heading up a government filled with more of the same."
Mrs Smith was Labour MP for Crewe and Nantwich from June 2017 until December 2019.
The Crewe councillor was voted out after receiving 37.5% of the vote compared to Dr Kieran Mullan's 53.1%.
Cllr Smith Said: "Those that have supported him (Johnson) in government to this point might have got a resignation out of him, but remember this isn't just a Boris problem, it's a Tory problem.
"The country is feeling the pain because of the political choices, proposed, promoted and voted on by the Conservatives."
On July 6, Crewe and Nantwich MP, Dr Kieran Mullan reaffirmed his stance on Boris Johnson - believing his resignation was the only option.
Dr Mullan voted against Boris Johnson in the no confidence vote last month (June).
Over 50 members of Johnson's government and party resigned this week - more ministerial resignations than any PM in modern history.
Cllr Smith added: "There are real alternatives that could make life better for the majority, but instead they (Tories) remain ideologically determined to look after the interests of the richest in society at the expense of everyone else.
"More wealth than ever before, but more poverty.
"The only way through this is to organise in your workplace and community.
"Join a union, get active, and when the election comes, let's get them out."
Currently there is no known date for the next general election in the UK. It can be held no later than Thursday, January 23, 2025.
Crewe West Labour councillor, Connor Naismith, told Nub News: "Boris Johnson resigning is clearly good news for anyone who believes in integrity and honour in our politics.
"The last thing the country can afford now is for government to be consumed by a psychodrama in the Conservative party.
"We are facing the deepest cost of living crisis in a generation, a deadly war in Europe and the government's catastrophic handling of Brexit creating trade barriers within the British isles.
"This is on top of the last 12 years of economic stagnation and 12 years of declining public services.
"What we need now, not on a timetable determined by the Conservative party, is a government on the side of the British people with a plan to tackle the issues affecting their every day lives."
Labour is still awaiting the timetable for its Crewe and Nantwich parliamentary candidate selection process.
This is to be determined by the party's National Executive Committee (NEC).
