Crewe is bringing the coast to the town centre this August Bank Holiday with Discover Crewe-on-Sea, a free, family-friendly seaside experience taking place from Saturday 23 August to Monday 25 August.

Brought to you by Crewe Town Council and sponsored by Crewe Business Improvement District (BID), Discover Crewe-on-Sea will take place across Lyceum Square.

The event forms part of Crewe Town Council's wider Summer Festival of Fun and will transform the square into a colourful coastal pop-up, complete with real sand, a beach hut and boat, buckets and spades, and plenty of hands-on entertainment.

Running from 11am to 4pm each day, visitors can relax in deckchairs, get involved in craft workshops and enjoy live performances throughout the weekend.

Brought to you by Crewe Town Council and sponsored by Crewe Business Improvement District (BID), Discover Crewe-on-Sea will take place across Lyceum Square from Saturday 23 August to Monday 25 August (Ryan Parker).

As well as animating the town centre and supporting local businesses, Discover Crewe-on-Sea will include a themed trail linking the town's three Business Improvement District zones.

Each area offers something different, from essential services of Nantwich Road to the well-known retailers at Grand Junction Retail Park and the cultural heart of Crewe town centre, home to independents and family attractions.

The trail will feature hidden challenges and photo opportunities, alongside opportunities for children to design 'Postcards from Crewe' celebrating lesser-known parts of the town's heritage, from the iconic blue Owl Telescope to the world-famous Whitby Morrison ice cream vans.

Chair of the Crewe Business Improvement District board and General Manager at South Cheshire Glass, Graham Saunders, said: "Crewe BID works to make the town centre a better place to do business by increasing footfall, raising the area's profile and delivering initiatives that enhance safety, public spaces and local pride.

"This event ticks all of those boxes and is all about giving people a unique and memorable experience right in the heart of their town.

"Activities like this help strengthen the connection between local people and their high street. They give businesses a real boost and help shift perceptions of what Crewe town centre can offer.

"It is set to be a real celebration of community and Crewe's character, and we are proud to bring it to life as part of this summer's programme."

With over 180 free activities taking place across the school holidays, the Summer Festival of Fun offers families in Crewe a wide range of things to do close to home.

Crewe was the manufacturer of Owl Telescopes, frequently placed on piers and promenades in coastal towns (like Pensarn pictured), providing views of the sea or surrounding landscape (Ryan Parker).

Led by Crewe Town Council, the programme includes everything from park sports and outdoor theatre to library workshops and cultural pop-ups, all designed to encourage people to get involved, try something new and spend more time in the town.

A Crewe Town Council spokesperon said: "In partnership with Discover Crewe we are excited to bring Discover Crewe-on-Sea to you this August Bank Holiday weekend.

"We developed the idea to highlight one of Crewe's less-dominant narratives, its links to the traditional British seaside.

"Did you know Crewe is home to the world's leading manufacturer of ice cream vehicles? Founded by Bryan Whitby in 1962, Whitby Morrison has been operating in Crewe for six decades.

"But this isn't Crewe's only connection to the seaside, Crewe was also the manufacturer of Owl Telescopes, frequently placed on piers and promenades in coastal towns providing views of the sea, harbour, or surrounding landscape.

"We are proud to deliver this event as part of Crewe Town Council's Summer Festival of Fun, which offers over 180 free to access events and activities throughout summer school holidays for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. We are grateful for the sponsorship and support from Discover Crewe."
