Free Covid-19 testing to end in Crewe this Friday

From 1 April and as part of central government plans to close all free testing sites by the end of March 2022 - local PCR testing sites currently in CREWE and Macclesfield will be closed.

Also, from Friday 1 April, free LFD tests will end, and residents will no longer be able to order test kits online from gov.uk or collect for free from a pharmacy.

The Government is yet to set out how much the tests will cost - although it is expected that retailers will remain competitive in their pricing.

Superdrug will be offering tests for as little as £1.99

Boots announced this month that it will charge £2.50 for a single test or £12 for a pack of five.

Crewe resident Hannah Chester, 18, told Nub News: "The tests can't be free forever.

"It is unfair for those that have to visit loved ones in care homes and pay for a test.

"Now that Covid has disappeared a little, the Government couldn't really keep subsidising them."

Where can I get Covid tests from?

LFD tests will continue to be available to purchase from pharmacies or online.

Free PCR Covid testing will be limited to a small number of people who are particularly at risk or work in certain health and social care settings. Further guidance will be provided on the Government website, once available.

The Government have been accused of not being clear whether NHS staff will need to pay for their own coronavirus tests.

If NHS staff are made to pay for Covid tests themselves, it would cost them an extra £50 per month.

What should I do if I test positive for COVID-19 after 1 April?

The current public health advice from the Government is to stay at home and avoid contact with others.
