Cheshire East respond to criticism of unfinished public artwork on Crewe roundabout

By Ryan Parker 29th Mar 2022

Cheshire East Council has responded to criticism surrounding an unfinished piece of pubic artwork in a middle of Jack Mills Way roundabout - covered in traffic cones.

Last week, Crewe Nub News reported that a piece of public artwork, 'a solar gazer,' was left half-completed and left covered in traffic cones, on a Crewe gateway roundabout.

Crewe MP Dr Kieran Mullan, reported it to Cheshire East Council, unhappy with how it was left.

Read about it here: Crewe's new roundabout structure deemed a 'safety concern.'

"The roundabout is one of the main routes in and out of Crewe and for weeks now it has been littered with traffic cones with no explanation to the public,' said Dr Mullan.

There is a wide concern that how the roundabout currently looks, it creates a poor impression for residents and visitors coming into the town.

Crewe Town Clerk, Pete Turner, told Nub News last week: "It is a current and persistent disappointment that Crewe seems to be blighted by Cheshire East Highways' half measures."

Cheshire East Council has now responded to criticism of the unfinished public artwork and left traffic cones.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "To fulfil a planning condition as part of the Basford West development, the developer committed to fully-funding a piece of public artwork, to be installed on the roundabout.

"The council has worked with the developer to appoint the artist for this piece and manage the artwork's installation.

"During the installation of the artwork, the council's highways service requested that changes be made on road safety grounds.

"Alterations have been proposed to meet with a highways' safety audit review and these are currently being considered.

"The traffic cones will remain in place until a decision is made."

Constructed by artist and engineer Soli Studios - on behalf of developer Goodman Logistics - so far only six steel sections have been built, several months into work on the site.

Cheshire East Council hope that safety measures on the roundabout can be resolved imminently.
