With the New Year upon us, Crewe Nub News has complied a list of six major developments coming/being completed in the town during 2024.

6 - Tim Hortons, Grand Junction Retail Park

Tim Hortons will be opening inside the former Frankie & Benny's unit on Grand Junction Retail Park (Ryan Parker).

In November, Cheshire East Council gave permission for Tim Hortons to open a new coffee shop/ restaurant with drive-thru in Crewe.

The Canadian eatery will take over the former Frankie & Benny's unit, selling food and drink for consumption on and off the premises.

Tim Hortons will also construct a new a drive-thru lane, along with making alterations to the car park.

The chain sells a variety of hot and cold food, including breakfasts, paninis, burgers, sandwiches, wraps, doughnuts and lattice fries.

It also serves a selection of coffees, teas, hot chocolates, milkshakes, refreshers, coolers and soft drinks.

Tim Hortons will be open from 7am to 12am, seven days per week. Work is expected to begin in 2024.

5 - Crewe's Southern Gateway Pedestrian and Cycling Connectivity Scheme, Mill Street, High Street and Forge Street

Crewe's Southern Gateway Pedestrian and Cycling Connectivity Scheme will connect Mill Street with the rear of Crewe Lifestyle Centre (Cheshire East Council).

In March, Crewe's Southern Gateway Pedestrian and Cycling Connectivity Scheme was approved, connecting Mill Street with the rear of Crewe Lifestyle Centre.

This scheme is aimed at transforming the southern part of Crewe town centre, creating a new arrival point into the town.

A new cycleway/footway link will be created, set within a public realm scheme, located on derelict land between High Street and Forge Street.

There will be a two-way route for cyclists and a separate pedestrian route, with new street lighting.

Seating areas, trees and shrubs and a new rain garden will also be included, located between the cyclist and pedestrian route.

Work is set to start at the beginning of the year, targeted to be completed by summer.

4 - Bodycare, The Market Shopping Centre

Bodycare is set to open inside the former Clintons in The Market Shopping Centre in 2024 (Ryan Parker).

It will be launching inside the former Clintons store, with its recruitment confirmed this January.

Bodycare sells big brand products at discounted prices in fragrances, cosmetics, skincare, haircare and toiletries, for men and women.

The UK chain also sells a number of household, health and wellbeing, holiday and electrical items.

Currently, Bodycare's nearest store to Crewe is in Newcastle-under-Lyme, 15 miles away.

An opening date for Bodycare is yet to be confirmed. The company has over 100 stores across the UK.

3 - Flag Lane Adventure Play Area

Flag Lane Adventure Playground will be constructed in unused woodland next to Chester Street Car Park and Flag Lane (Ryan Parker).

The free leisure area is aimed at children between the ages of six and 16.

Targeted for completion by summer 2024, the development will offer families a safe and challenging environment for children to meet, play freely, learn and access nature and the arts.

Flag Lane Adventure Playground is a project designed and funded in partnership between Wild Rumpus, Flag Lane Baths and Cheshire Wildlife Trust.

The playground is aimed at being a parent-free zone where children have the freedom to choose their play, under the supervision of highly skilled play workers.

A drop-in event for the development was held at Crewe Market Hall on Thursday 7 December. Work is expected to begin in 2024.

2 - Completion of North West Crewe Package (NWCP)

Cheshire East Council has confirmed the North West Crewe Package will be completed in May 2024 (Cheshire East Council).

The North West Crewe Package (NWCP) scheme has seen a series of highways and junction improvements made around the Leighton area in North West Crewe.

It aims to ease congestion and improve access to Leighton Hospital, bringing opportunities for local businesses to expand, as well as new and existing housing developments.

The NWCP scheme sees the construction of a new 2.6km single carriageway road and seven new roundabouts.

It also includes the realignment of Smithy Lane, Flowers Lane and existing junction improvements on the A530 Middlewich Road and Minshull New Road.

A section of Minshull New Road located outside Leighton Academy will be closed to traffic, aiming to create a safe environment for children arriving and leaving the school.

Cheshire East Council has confirmed the North West Crewe Package will be completed in May 2024.

Peveril Securities, Cordwell Property and Bowmer and Kirkland, are currently constructing phase one of Crewe's Royal Arcade development, with phase two scrapped.

Phase one was targeted be completed by the end of 2023, but has been pushed back due to a number of delays.

The multi-storey car park will have 388 spaces and 20 electric vehicle charging points.

Eight temporary bus stands are in place until the new interchange is complete.

'Meanwhile uses' are being planned for phase two of the development. The land will go back into the hands of Cheshire East Council once phase one is complete.
