Crewe Town Council has purchased five defibrillators which will be sited across Crewe - in order to help save lives in the event of a cardiac arrest.

The equipment has been funded through Crewe Town Council's Health & Wellbeing Fund - Community Plan Committee.

So far three of the units have been installed and registered on the national defibrillator database.

A defibrillator is a device that gives an electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone in cardiac arrest.

Without defibrillation a person in cardiac arrest will die. Crewe Town Council has aimed to give people in Crewe a fighting chance.

The North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust state that using a defibrillator within five minutes can result in survival rates as high as 70% and that otherwise, less than 1 in 10 people will survive a cardiac arrest.

If a medical emergency is experienced near a defibrillator location, a call should be made to 999 for further guidance and to obtain the access code (if appropriate).

The three units have been installed by local Crewe company Powerhive Electrical, in the following locations: Blitz Fireworks, Hightown, Wishing Well Project, George's Community Centre, West Street and The Cheese Hall pub, Earle Street.

The location of the remaining two defibrillators will be announced in the coming weeks via Crewe Town Council's Facebook page

It is the intention of Crewe Town Council that the units will be distributed as far as possible across Crewe to ensure the greatest coverage possible.

A Crewe Town Council representative said: "We are delighted to have been able to fund and deliver the defibrillator project across Crewe.

"It's a worthwhile project, which might just end up saving a life.

"The potential difference that these defibrillators may make within our community is invaluable, please tell your friends and family about them."

Each location will be responsible for undertaking weekly checks of the equipment. 

Mr John Malam from Blitz Fireworks, Hightown, is really pleased to be involved: "We are a Crewe based company born and bred and have been trading on Hightown for 15 years.

"We are immensely proud to partner up with Crewe Town Council on this initiative and we are very grateful to be chosen as a custodian for the siting of this life-saving equipment in a very busy location."

Mr Charles Maines from The Wishing Well project said: "The Wishing Well are pleased to be working with our friends and partners at Crewe Town Council to help make our communities a safer place for local residents.

"The George's Community Centre is a hub for local people with many Crewe residents using the centre, adjacent playing fields and neighbouring Queen's Park as a place to meet others and get active.

"To have an accessible defibrillator at The George's, the community are now equipped to help save lives if an emergency arises.

"We are incredibly grateful to Crewe Town Council for selecting The Wishing Well to host this defibrillator and whilst we hope it is not needed, it is reassuring to have such equipment available if it is required."

The third unit installed at the Cheese Hall, Earle Street adjacent to Crewe Market Hall (Tony Griffiths).

Mr Mark Desai, Landlord at the Cheese Hall said at the official unveiling: "This can only be a good thing for the community and Crewe town centre.

"We are happy to have it sited here on the outside of our premises."
