Crewe woman's 'Black Lives Matter' taunts at PC racially abused for 4th time in a month
A CREWE woman taunted a police officer about the Black Lives Matter campaign then launched a tirade of racial abuse in his direction, a court heard.
Rachel Caiger turned on the PC when he attended a dispute at her home in Bowen Cooke Avenue. When the officer restrained her and placed her in the cell of his van the defendant spat out a volley of abuse at him, which he said was targeted at the colour of his skin.
Caiger, 34, appeared at South Cheshire Magistrates' Court where she admitted a charge of racially aggravated harassment on July 26 this year.
In a victim impact statement read out to the court PC Cann said it was the 11th time in three-and-half year's service with the force that he had been subjected to forms of racial abuse.
"That is the equivalent of being subjected to hate and racism every four months," he stated.
"I came to work as a police officer to protect the most vulnerable in the community and I don't expect to hear language like this being used because of my skin colour.
"I'm proud of my heritage and my skin colour. I hope the CPS take a very dim view in the current climate."
Prosecutor Rob Youds said when police arrived Caiger was in a dispute with her neighbour Tamsin Culverhouse and both women were shouting at each other.
Caiger was asked to calm down as the officer could hear a child crying. But she became abusive and shouted at the officer "Black lives matter, black lives matter".
He warned her, saying "Don't go there", but she responded: "Why not that's what they all say."
"He believed she was saying that because he was black, but he decided to ignore it," said the prosecutor.
"He spoke to the other woman too, but he had reason to arrest the defendant. She was taken to the van, but she was resisting and he put her in the back cell."
At that point Caig shouted racial expletives at the PC who said he felt targeted because of his colour.
"There is some body-worn footage of the incident and the officer does swear at her. He said he shouldn't have said that but it was because he was being racially abused for the fourth time in the last month," added the prosecutor.
Caiger, who represented herself in court, insisted she was not a racist, but alcohol caused her problems. She said she suffered from bipolar disorder and admitted she didn't control her mental health condition well at times.
"I'm not proud of what I did, but I can't remember the night. I am working with social services because it is the second time I've had a drink problem. I am getting help with my anger," she said.
"I am disgusted and I can only apologise. I don't think it mattered that he (the PC) was black, it was just me being vile and inhuman. He could have been white and I would have had a go.
"I'm not a racist, I'm trying to sort myself out."
Probation officer Mike Bolliver said the defendant was keen to engage with the organisation Cheshire Without Abuse, whom she had been referred to.
"She is ashamed. She normally doesn't consume alcohol because of the medication she takes, but she consumed a considerable amount on this occasion," said the probation officer.
Magistrates told Caiger, of Bowen Cooke Avenue, to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £50 compensation to the police officer. She also has to pay costs of £95 and a victim surcharge of £95.
