Crewe waits to see if tier status will change as PM sets out post lockdown plans
PRIME Minister Boris Johnson is set to announce details of how new guidelines about coronavirus will be implemented when the current lockdown ends on Wednesday, December 2.
When the second national lockdown was imposed Crewe was graded in tier two, along with the rest of Cheshire East.
However, on the resumption it is expected the government will grade areas and there will be changes in the levels of restrictions imposed in each tier.
The PM is set to brief the nation this afternoon (November 23) although it may not be until Thursday that Crewe knows which tier it is in as further evaluations are undertaken.
Areas that were in tier one at lockdown may be lifted into tier two and those in tier two could find themselves in tier three.
Cheshire East Council leader Sam Corcoran has said that tier two restrictions were unlikely to have kept a lid on the borough's rising infection rates a month ago.
But the latest Covid-19 figures show the lockdown has had an impact in bringing down the rate of infection in Cheshire East which is down to 196.8 coronavirus cases per 100,000 population.
There are still blackspot areas with much higher levels of infection than the borough average. These include the Sydney and Gateway neighbourhood of Crewe, although its rolling rate (up to November 17) has dropped from 720.9 to 474.8 per 100,000 population over a week.
Some of the things we can expect from Mr Johnson's address are:
- Gyms and non-essential shops will to be allowed to reopen.
- Parts of the tier system may be tougher, but the 10pm closing time for pubs and restaurants will be relaxed.
- the ban on outdoor grassroots sport is set to be lifted.
