A Crewe venue has been awarded the South Cheshire CAMRA Branch 'Community Pub of the Year' for 2024, beating local competition.

The Raven, Brookhouse Drive, was handed a certificate by the Campaign For Real Ale on Tuesday 22 May, during its weekly quiz night.

The South Cheshire CAMRA Branch covers the southern central area of Cheshire, including the towns of Crewe, Sandbach, Alsager, Nantwich, Middlewich and Winsford.

Operated by Julie Moore, with the help from her team, The Raven had raised thousands of pounds for charity over recent years.

Julie told Nub News: "A member of the South Cheshire CAMRA is a customer of ours and had been praising us to others about how much we did for the local community.

"We were nominated for the award and won. We are absolutely chuffed to get it, it felt lovely.

"Over the last couple of years, we have been running a number of fundraising events. The first year we did it for The Christie Charity, raising £8,000.

"In 2023, we ran an event for The Wishing Well, raising £5,000 and recently hosted the Hadzilla Cup for pancreatic cancer, where they raised over £11,000.

"With our fundraisers, the main thing we do is our bike rides. In 2022 we cycled to Wembley and back and last year we went to Paris and back.

"This year there was a suggestion of us doing Route 66 in August. This is yet to be finalised and we will discuss what charity we would all like to donate to soon.

Julie has been working at The Raven since 2015, becoming the manager of the venue following the COVId 19 pandemic.

The manager said: "I have been at The Raven for nine and a half years now. After being the assistant manager, I took over the reigns following the Covid when the previous manager left.

"We run weekly quizzes, have live music on every weekend, run a last man standing and super six competition and also have a pub football team.

The Raven is open 4pm to 8pm (Monday), 4pm to 11pm (Tuesday to Thursday), 1pm until 12am (Friday and Saturday) and 1pm to 11pm (Sunday) (Ryan Parker).

"In summertime, we also run Summer Vibes, an old-school R&B party on our roof terrace. It is a hidden gem up there and a proper suntrap.

"This is a great pub, our customers are brilliant. People come in from the estates on each side of us and the banter in here is amazing."
