A Crewe town centre frozen food supermarket chain is set to permanently close down later this year - following a decision made by head office.

Iceland Foods, Market Shopping Centre, will close down on Saturday 16 September - following an announcement to staff on Monday 19 June.

Nub News understands the town centre store currently employs 22 staff - with many workers wondering what's next.

On Tuesday 20 June, executive chairman of Iceland Foods, Richard Walker, confirmed the store's imminent Crewe town centre closure (Ryan Parker).

This shop closure comes after The Food Warehouse, part of the Iceland Foods Group, opened on Crewe's Grand Junction Retail Park in November 2020.

On Tuesday 20 June, executive chairman of Iceland Foods, Richard Walker, confirmed the store's imminent Crewe town centre closure.

Mr Walker told Nub News: "Across Iceland and The Food Warehouse we have a portfolio of over UK 1,000 stores, and our retail estate has grown by nearly 200 stores over the last ten years.

"We typically open more than 20 new stores each year, creating many new jobs and contributing to the growth of local economies.

"At the same time, we continually review the retail experience offered to our customers and have always made a small number of store closures every year, as local shopping patterns change and shop leases expire.

"The business is currently trading very strongly, achieving record market shares.

"Customers can find their closest Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores here."

The Food Warehouse will permanently remain open on Grand Junction Retail Park - continuing to trade successfully.

Former Iceland Foods employee, Ryan Parker, added: "It is always sad to see a shop close down. I worked here for five years before moving on to Nub News last year.

"This store remains popular, especially with the elderly, as it is much smaller and easier to navigate than The Food Warehouse.

"I really feel for the staff, with many who have worked there for a long time. I wish all of them the very best when it does close this September."
