Crewe town centre roads have reopened following three weeks of works, with a new one-way system and cycle lane in place.

Delamere Street and St Marys Street reopened on Monday 11 March, after works were completed by Cheshire East Highways.

The one-way system runs from the junction of Flag Lane to Gatefield Street, with St Marys Street now a turn left junction only.

This project was mainly funded through the government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with some investment from its Future High Street Fund (CEC Highways).

It extends the Flag Lane Link scheme completed last year, also funded through the government's Future High Street Fund.

A key aim of scheme is to improve the flow of traffic at this busy junction for all road users but especially cyclists.

This is being achieved by adding a segregated contraflow cycle lane for cyclists, running from Delamere Street's junction with Gatefield Street to its junction with Flag Lane.

Cheshire East Council's walking and cycling member champion, Cllr Chris Hilliard, said: "This junction is a busy spot and so I am delighted the needs of cyclists have been fully taken into account with this excellent new project.

"The Flag Lane Link significantly improved access to the town centre, by reducing congestion and journey times in and out of Crewe by linking Dunwoody Way to Delamere Street via Flag Lane last year.

"This work has already benefited cyclists significantly, but this next phase of work will now hopefully encourage even more people to get out on their bikes and trikes."
