Crewe town centre project to go ahead - despite 'abandoned' rumours
Cheshire East Council has confirmed that a Crewe town centre project will go ahead as planned - despite rumours on social media that it had been abandoned.
Yesterday (June 21), a number of rumours were circulating on social media that the Lyceum Square project, 'LY2,' has been abandoned.
The rumour said the square could remain as a free car park for Crewe Market Hall and Crewe Lyceum Theatre - encouraging shoppers into the town during the day.
Yesterday, Cheshire East Council told Nub News that wasn't the case and the project will go ahead.
A council spokesperson said: "The Lyceum Square project is very much going ahead.
"As you say in your enquiry there are rumours - but they are just that.
"There is no truth in them whatsoever."
Cheshire East Council approved the events and performance space development at Lyceum Square with conditions - back on May 5.
The Ly2 project is being delivered by Cheshire East Council and overseen by Crewe Town Board. It is also being supported by Crewe Town Council.
The £750,000 Crewe Town Board project was first proposed in September 2021. It will include a new events stage and integrated digital screen.
It aims to enhance the setting of the Lyceum Theatre and Crewe Market Hall and create a cultural heart for the town centre.
A new performance area will be constructed with a raised stage created with shipping containers.
The existing outdoor market shed roof will become an arts and cultural market space.
New street lights and street furniture will be constructed, aiming to brighten up the area at night and 'define a new identity' for Lyceum Square.
Crewe Lyceum Theatre and Crewe Market Hall will also be enhanced through new wall mounted amenity lighting.
The LY2 scheme will mean that Lyceum Square car park will permanently close.
This closure was subject to a consultation from the council back in the spring.
The current disabled parking bays on Lyceum Square will be relocated towards the edge of the square - fitting in with the new vision of the space as an events hub.
