Crewe town centre's demolition site has been compared to the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima - sent to to residents in a new political flyer.

The comparison with the destruction caused to the Japanese city was made by a political group, Putting Crewe First.

This group is led by former Crewe and Nantwich borough mayor, Cllr Brian Silvester.

The political flyer shows a picture of the Crewe's £48 million Royal Arcade development site.

The area surrounding Queensway, Victoria Street and Delamere Street has been a building site since November 2020.

The Royal Arcade site was purchased by Cheshire East Council in April 2015 for a fee of £6 million.

This leaflet mentioned Crewe town centre's promised 'new cinema, gym, restaurants, shops, a 450-space car park and bus station by Christmas 2020.'

It then adds: 'Over two years after that deadline and what have we got?' This part of the town centre looks like a bomb site'.

Crewe's Royal Arcade development is slowly progressing - with a new temporary bus station being brought into use on Tuesday 3 January, 2023.

A new permanent bus interchange and multi-storey car park is expected to be complete in winter 2023.

The second part of the scheme, a commercial and leisure-led development, is now being targeted for completion in winter 2025.

Chair of Cheshire East Council's economy and growth committee, Councillor Nick Mannion, said: "It is fantastic news that we have reached this stage of the scheme.

Crewe's new temporary bus station is being brought into use on January 4, 2023 (Ryan Parker).

"We are moving ever closer to providing Crewe and its communities with new modern and attractive transport facilities.

"By continuing to work on the scheme in the run up to the festive period, we will ensure that we stay on track and can open the temporary bus station first thing in the new year.

"We will of course make sure that there will be as little disruption as possible to those accessing the town centre during this time."

Crewe's Royal Arcade development target completion date has already been pushed back on several occasions.
