A popular Crewe frozen food supermarket has closed its doors for the last time, after more than 30 years of trading in the town centre.

Iceland Foods, Market Shopping Centre, permanently closed at 6pm on Saturday 16 September.

This closure was three months the making following after an Iceland announcement to staff earlier this summer.

Iceland Crewe store manager, Ben Shaw, told Nub News: "Myself and my staff here at Iceland Crewe are deeply saddened to have closed the doors for the last time.

"We have enjoyed serving and being apart of the community over the last 33 years.

"I would also like to say thank you to my staff who showed commitment and dedication all the way through to the end despite a difficult time.

"As most of us are transferring to Crewe Food Warehouse, we hope we continue to see all the regular faces and meet new faces over at Grand Junction Retail Park, and continue to serve the Crewe community."

The Food Warehouse, part of the Iceland Foods Group, opened on Grand Junction Retail Park back in November 2020 (Nub News).

Iceland Crewe's closure comes after The Food Warehouse, part of the Iceland Foods Group, opened on Grand Junction Retail Park in November 2020.

In June, executive chairman of Iceland Foods, Richard Walker, said: "Across Iceland and The Food Warehouse, we have a portfolio of over UK 1,000 stores, and our retail estate has grown by nearly 200 stores over the last ten years.

"We typically open more than 20 new stores each year, creating many new jobs and contributing to the growth of local economies.

"At the same time, we continually review the retail experience offered to our customers and have always made a small number of store closures every year, as local shopping patterns change and shop leases expire.

"The business is currently trading very strongly, achieving record market shares.

Iceland's closure comes as another blow to Crewe town centre with TUI, Victoria Centre, recently relocating to Grand Junction Retail Park and Wilko and The Works set to close (Ryan Parker).

"Customers can find their closest Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores here."
