Saturday Football: Jaguars and Curshaws top table, but Cheshire League pain for Crewe FC

By Gwyn Griffiths 27th Aug 2021

CREWE Town Jaguars and Sandbach Curshaws are joint top of the early Crewe and District League table after both sides maintained their 100 per cent starts.

Crewe Town Jaguars beat their reserve team, who were making their league debut, by a 5-1 margin. Adam Grant netted a double while Scott Hunter, Steve Rushton and Nathan Schofield were also on the scoresheet with Macca Fellows replying for the reserves.

Curshaws needed a strong second-half show to see off Mary Dendy after the sides were locked at 1-1 at the break. They eventually eased to a 4-1 win with Darren Bailey, Jordan Bickerton, Sam Critchley and Cameron Mitchell scoring the visitors' goals. Bjorn Hughes kept the game competitive in the first half when netting for Mary Dendy.

Sandbach Town enjoyed success in their first game which turned out to be a seven-goal thriller with neighbours and newcomers Elworth Park Rangers.

Lee Wakefield scored twice for Sandbach Town and Jack Curwen and Ashley Morrey were also on target while Elworth Park Rangers ran them close with James Husher converting a penalty and Connor Bird and Arron Clarke also on the sheet.

Saturday's football action also saw CREWE FC kick off their season in the Cheshire League. But it proved not to be the greatest of starts for Liam O'Reilly's side as they were on the end of a 9-1 thrashing from Egerton at the Cumberland Arena.

Crewe were 6-0 down at the break and while Mike Blundell scored a second-half consolation they will want to look ahead quickly to next Saturday's encounter when they hosts second-placed GPSO at the Cumberland (K.O 2pm).

Meanwhile, Crewe's reserve team went down to a 2-1 defeat at Lostock Gralam in their first game of the season.
