Crewe Sunday League: abandonment and Covid-19 call off mar programme

By Gwyn Griffiths 27th Aug 2021

CANCELLATIONS and a bizarre last-minute abandonment hit the Crewe Regional Sunday League on the third weekend of the new campaign.

Only two Premier Division fixtures took place with The Lions home game with Crewe Athletic postponed because of a positive Covid-19 test.

Faddiley's pitch was waterlogged so the visit of Salvador was also off.

And the Division One fixture between Nantwich Pirates and Cuddington FC was abandoned amid late drama.

The game, which was switched from Northwich to the Barony Park in Nantwich, saw the Pirates lead 2-0 and then fall 2-3 down before a late fight back saw them 4-3 ahead in the final minute.

At that stage a player from each side was sent off after an altercation and Cuddington declined to continue with the walk-off leaving the referee with no option but to abandon the game.

Scorers for The Pirates were Joey Hilton (2), Michael Truan and Keiron Jones, while Lewis Greenwood, Kyle Caudwell and Kyle Catterall replied for Cuddington.

George and Dragon maintained their 100 per cent start in the Premier Division with a 6-2 thrashing of Willaston White Star. They are six points clear of Betley who were beaten at home by newly-promoted The Raven. Gary Pownall and Josh Wynne netted as the visitors picked up a 2-1 win while Jamie Baker replied for Betley, who missed a penalty kick.

AFC Talbot lead the Division One table after maintaining their 100 per cent start with a 4-0 win over Sandbach Town thanks to a hat-trick from Declan Scott and a goal from Jack Gilbert.

Broadhurst FC are the other team in joint top position after they won 4-2 at White Horse with goals from Danny Griffiths (2), Dom Johnson and Mark Griffiths. Adam Smithies and Nick Gregory netted for The Horse.

Princes Feathers beat C & N Utd 3-1 with goals from Jamie Cain (2) and Lewis Larkin. Tom Hayton scored for the visitors.

Ben Ruddock netted twice for Sydney Arms as they beat league new boys JS Bailey 5-2. Rhys Potter, Chris Williams and Joe Benson also scored for Sydney, while Liam Challinor and Luke White replied for JS Bailey.

And Winnington SC secured their first win of the season when beating Talbot by a 2-0 margin.
