Crewe Alex: players and staff face Covid testing after Oxford postponement
CREWE'S players and staff will undertake Covid-19 tests after today's League One game at Oxford was postponed.
Dave Artell informed the hosts at the Kassam Stadium that a member of the Crewe squad had received news of a positive test this morning and the fixture was called off half an hour before kick-off after discussions between club officials, the EFL and medics.
The Crewe manager revealed that another Alex player has also produced a positive test. While both players have shown no coronavirus symptoms they will have to self-isolate for 10 days.
Artell told BBC Radio Stoke: "I had a text off one of the boys saying he had tested positive after having a test off his own back. We came to the ground and the first opportunity I got I told their manager (Karl Robinson).
"We were prepared to play, Oxford probably quite rightly said they didn't want to expose their players to that, which is quite understandable as they don't know how many are infected on our bus.
"The infected player came down with us yesterday and stayed with us overnight....all in separate rooms."
The Crewe manager added: "We will be tested tomorrow or Monday to ascertain the extent of the spread if there is one.
"It is the sensible decision, it's a reflection of what happens if you don't test. There is a greater good that has to come over and above football.
"We are all for testing and that is they way it has got to go. We'll see where we get to and fingers crossed we don't get any more positive results."
Neither club will face any sanctions over the cancellation and the EFL said in a statement: "Each case is judged on its individual merits and due to the circumstances the club has advised the EFL it is unable to fulfil the fixture as players and first team staff are now required to self-isolate in line with EFL and government guidance."
Crewe said in a statement: "We are unable to fulfil today's fixture against Oxford United due to one of our players being notified this morning that he is COVID-19 positive."
Oxford say no new date has yet been fixed for the game.
