Cheshire East Council has today (May 27), confirmed Platinum Jubilee street party road closures are free - rejecting Dr Kieran Mullan's claims (Ian Hargreaves).

Cheshire East Council has rejected claims by Crewe MP Dr Kieran Mullan - believing the council was charging £900 for Platinum Jubilee street party road closures.

This week, Dr Mullan was contacted by residents of Marsh Lane, Nantwich, who were looking forward to a street party at an earlier date of Sunday 15th May - only to be told they would be charged £900 for just two road signs.

The four-day bank holiday weekend celebration for the Platinum Jubilee is from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June 2022

This is the time when street party road closures will be free - say Cheshire East Council.

Residents of Marsh Lane, Nantwich, were looking to have a street party on Sunday 15 May - only to be told they would be charged £900 for two road signs (Kieran Mullan MP).

Today (May 27), a Cheshire East Council spokesperson told Nub News: "The council announced at the beginning of March, that it would not be charging for a Queen's Platinum Jubilee street party road closure.

"We have been made aware that the quote for traffic management signs to close Marsh Lane was provided by an external traffic management company, not Cheshire East Council.

"During this period of celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, our highways team is supporting local communities who are organising street parties, by loaning out signage such as 'Road Closed' signs, free of charge, if requested.

"In preparation for the Jubilee celebrations, the council has been extremely supportive of applications for street parties and has provided a community fund, allowing resident groups to apply for up to £120 towards the organisation of a street party.

"Prior to the close date of 8 April 2022 - a total of £23,500 had been claimed from this fund."

Dr Kieran Mullan had believed the £900 road closure fee was for all Crewe and Nantwich residents street parties.

He said: "The Platinum Jubilee weekend is going to an amazing opportunity for people to come together and celebrate the Queen's 70-year reign with their friends and neighbours.

"Whilst I understand the need for there being some charge, £900.00 for road signs seems very excessive and may prevent many people in Crewe and Nantwich, who may have liked to mark the occasion with their neighbours.

"I have called on Cheshire East to drop the charge, like other local authorities, and quickly so that everyone can celebrate this joyous occasion."

Cheshire East Council has now confirmed that this is not the case.

So far, there have been 90 applications for street parties across the borough.

Queen Elizabeth II will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years on the throne - next week.
