SHAVINGTON is joining the nation's Platinum Jubilee beacon lighting chain on the evening of Thursday, June 2.

More than 2,000 beacons are being lit in the UK and the Commonwealth as part of the official programme for next week's Jubilee Weekend.

And one of the locations will be on the playing fields at Shavington Primary School in an initiative organised by Shavington-cum-Gresty Parish Council and Shavington Village Festival Committee.

The beacon will be lit at 9.45pm on the field, joining light shows in all 54 Commonwealth capitals and the Principal Beacon lighting which takes place in a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Thursday evening.

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee will be celebrated over four days (Picture: Wikipedia).

This will take the form of a lighting installation with The Queen's Green Canopy 'Tree of Trees' sculpture and projections onto the front of Buckingham Palace to reflect the Royal Family's long history championing environmental causes.

The event in Shavington will start at 8.30pm and there will be refreshments served by Woodnoth-cum- Shavington Womens's Institute in St Mark's Church Hall.

Chairman of Shavington-cum-Gresty Parish Council Cllr Benjamin Gibbs, said: "We are proud to be part of this momentous celebration.

"It is only appropriate that this unique milestone in history is marked with beacons and music.

"We are honoured to be part of this special event for Her Majesty, The Queen's 70th year as our Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth on her Platinum Jubilee."

The lighting of the beacon will start four day of events in the village.

These are:

Friday, June 3: Jubilee Concert (7pm) with live music from each of the decades of Her Majesty's reign.

Saturday, June 4: Village festival 12-4pm, with staff, food, dog show and entertainment.

Sunday, June 5: Finale to the celebrations with a joint church service and community picnic on the church field.

And the celebrations in Shavington-cum-Gresty do not end there as the parish council has launched a community initiative for the summer months called #Queenbee.

This is a Jubilee inspired conservation project with over 12 community groups involved in activities and workshops. There is also the opportunity for residents to be involved in art and sunflower-growing competitions.
