A Crewe community project is urgently asking for support and potentially facing closure - following the news a UK leading charity is pulling the plug on funding this summer.

Crewe's Men in Sheds, Brierley Street, was formed in 2010.

It is a project that helps 45-year-old men and older to find a purpose in life and know they aren't alone - with group activities to keep them company.

Yesterday (July 11), the Crewe project announced it will no longer receive support from the UK's leading charity for older people, Age UK, this August.

This funding cut has the potential to entirely close the community project down.

Crewe Men in Sheds called for support on social media, saying: "We have a bit of news to pass on. Crewe Men in Sheds are having their funding withdrawn by Age UK at the end of August leaving us with the prospect of closing."

The Crewe men's community club said this left them 'desperate' for money to keep the shed open.

It added: "The shed helps people impacted by retirement, unemployment, bereavement, old age, disability or ill health ( mental or physical) to meet up for a purpose.

"Of course we also do projects for the community.

"If anyone can put us in the right direction to obtain grants, donations, funding it will be a terrific help.

"Please help to keep the shed open, a lot of people depend on it."

Crewe Men in Sheds spoke to BBC Radio Stoke last night (July 11) - asking the public for support.

Co-ordinator, Mr Joe Ashton, told the radio station the clock was quickly ticking to find new backing for the club.

Men in Sheds is now looking for funding to cover the rent and overheads for its workshop.
